FUN FILLED FARM DAY IN CLOUGHJORDAN!

Open Day At Cloughjordan Community Farm:
Bring Your Dancing Shoes AND Your Wellies.

Come visit Cloughjordan Community Farm, for an intensive Open Day which finishes with an evening of dance with one of Ireland’s best known World Music DJ’s, WIll Softly, for sweet sweet evening sounds.

This Saturday, the 26th of May, farm enthusiasts, growers and anyone else interested in what's happening in Coughjordan are invited to Cloughjordan Community Farm's Open day and evening fundraiser. The event takes in the lower farm, research gardens, orchards and seed saving projects in the Ecovillage as well as visiting the upper farm which is a short distance away.

The Open Day is a fantastic opportunity to learn more about Ireland's first and largest community owned and operated farm, which now has 65 member-families receiving weekly supplies of the freshest of vegetables and milk. During the day, visitors have the opportunity to meet the farmers and members to learn first hand about Ireland’s leading Community Supported Agriculture initiative.

The day kicks off at 1.30 at the Coachhouse, just off Main Street, and at the entrance to Cloughjordan Ecovillage for short introduction to the community farm. First stop will be Bruce Darrell's new research and demonstration gardens, which explore different methods of growing food on a small scale. On the way to the Farm and Cultivate polytunnels, which are used to grow protected crops with a focus on maximising space and for seed saving, we will go through the orchards with the biggest collection of Irish native apple trees outside Irish SeedSavers in Scarriff.  Kevin Dudley will be on hand to answer questions about seed saving and his work for the farm.

The Cloughjordan Community farm ‘lower’ farm is the next stop, which is the vegetable growing plot located at the rear of the Ecovillage site. Farmer Pat Malone will be on hand to discuss crops, challenges and plans for the future.

At 3.40, the group will assemble at the Step Road (the vehicle side entrance to the Ecovillage) and car share to the ‘upper farm’ in Gaurran Lane, 1.5 miles away. Owen Crawford, farmer, and one of the farm’s supporters and advisors, Gillies McBain, will explain the significant work being carried out on the ‘Upper farm’.  Following the tour the group returns to the Ecovillage where a tasty soup, made from farm produce, will be provided at Django’s Hostel at 5.30.

The evening activities begin at 8.30pm, where Ireland’s leading World music DJ will be getting everybody moving at a fundraising event in Cloughjordan House. The World Party, with guest DJ Will Softly, will feature his spectacular sizzling selection of tunes as well as the relaxing environment of a Global Cafe, with tasty eats and refreshments, including fair trade coffee, crepes, barbecue and drinks. This is an evening for everyone, entrance cost is €10, all proceeds going to the Cloughjordan Community Farm.

The Cloughjordan Community Farm:
The Cloughjordan Community Farm is a member owned and operated Community Supported Agriculture initiative based in Cloughjordan. It aims to develop a healthy food culture and a secure local food supply, as well as hosting training in resilient food systems. The Cloughjordan Community Farm is the first example of ‘community farming’ in Ireland. The farm contracts two farmers and has 65 member families involved.

Although new in Ireland, the concept is growing rapidly with groups from Kerry, various parts of Dublin and Roscommon setting up similar projects.

Community farming enables the farmer to have a direct relationship with a community to which he supplies food. Both the farmer and members share the risks, rewards and responsibilities of farming and growing food. Members are invited to have an active input into the farm, with both payment and time, to help out with work on the farm. In return they get a supply of fresh, local, seasonal food, get to participate in farm events, and the farmers gets a guaranteed, regular income.
