A CASE FOR ORGANIC

Organic farming and food are chronically under supported in Ireland. To help make the case for organic, in light of the ongoing CAP negotiations and the EU presidency, which Ireland will have from January, I've put together a paper. Organic offers numerous public policy goods, and if it is better supported, these goods can better be delivered.

So here's a link to a paper I wrote for the recent Teagasc National Organic Conference in Tullamore.

It makes a case for organic farming and food under the following headings: Biodiversity, soil, landscape, water, air/climate, energy, yield, nutrition and safety. While all are important, biodiversity is the main focus of this particular paper (its already 10,000 words long!)

This paper is just a small contribution to making a case for organic and protecting the public policy good of biodiversity, or, more specifically, of halting biodiversity decline.

There is also some broader contextualisation of organic within the challenges facing the planet, the environment and the agri-food sector.
