NATIONAL ORGANIC CONFERENCE
All early November roads for organic farmers lead to Tullamore, where the National organic Conference will be held in the Bridge House Hotel. There, you will get a really up to date picture of what's happening in the world of organic farming and food. So what's happening?
For two days - 5th and 6th of November – a genuinely attractive event for organic producers and those in related sectors will be held.
Many of the contributors to this two event are real leaders in their field, and represent the best thinking from Ireland, the UK and beyond. Some of these have shone at recent events, such as Stephen Briggs of Abacus consulting and John Hogan, who spoke at the OGI conference earlier in the year.
Modeled somewhat on the January organic conferences in Birmingham, this event wisely streamlines the organic sectors into beef and sheep horticulture and dairy.
What this means is that you can, for the most part, stick to the area that suits you and your farming enterprise. See full programme at the image below.
On day one, the options are for beef and sheep, horticulture and dairy.
On day two, some similar streamlining occurs, with livestock/arable, conversion/market and horticulture the options.
(Click here to see a short vid from John Brennan explaining why you should attend!)
There is also a strong trade show dimension, with a range of participants already committed. These include processors, state agencies, certification bodies, financiers, suppliers and more.

After opening pleasantries, the event proper kicks off with a discussion on CAP and its implications for organic farmers. Chris Stopes (IFOAM), John Brennan (Leitrim Co-op) and Nik Lampkin (Organic Research Centre, UK) will be giving their thoughts.
Dan Clavin (The Teagasc organic advisor) will present findings from the organic production census, while Bord Bia and others will contribute on market opportunities after that.
Anais Rifford (Agence Bio) will outline the spectacular growth of the organic market in France, from a supplier’s perspective.
Then at 3.30, the streamlined sessions begin. Again, representative of various state, agri-food and farming participants will present, while a feedback session on findings will also occur.
Day one finishes with a networking/trade event, and an organic meal.
Day two starts with Marian Harkin, followed by streamlined sessions. These deal with Livestock/Arable deals with soil, clover, weeds, forage, feed, cereals and weather forecasting.

The Horticulture stream deals with pests/diseases (incl biological pest control), soil management and assessment, agroforesty and soil, field scale yield, seeds, direct selling and Apprenticeship.
(Note: the credible hulk will not be in attendance. At least I don't think he will be)
The event costs E30 per day, E50 for two days and E140 including food and accommodation. For more see NOTS website, follow NOTS on facebook or ring 071 9640688.
