Yet More Health and Safety Beneifts to Organic Food Revealed

phosphorus production
Three publications this year in the highly regarded British Journal of Nutrition have made the case for organic foods being “safer and more healthful” to use the words of a lead author of one of them.

Not that many people are listening. Now that the largest and most comprehensive publications on the topic ever conducted are saying, time and time again, that there are specific health and safety benefits to organic, the media has meekly skulked away. Small earthquake no one killed.

Yet the organic sector, following Dangour’s UK FSA study in 2009, and Smith-Spangler Stanford Study in 2011, has had to endure a barrage of unfounded criticism. This criticism was unfounded because there was already evidence from metastudies to point to organic’s benefits, even then, and even at the consumer end.

It’s just that these positive organic food publications were not embraced by the media in the same way as Dangour and Smith-Spangler were.

One of these new publications, an invited letter from McCarty and DiNicolantonio (2014) in the British Journal of Nutrition, summarises recent publications well, while also overviewing the general area.

It is noteworthy that the study led by Carlo Leifert, referenced in this blog some weeks back, was not even the subject of this letter. Leifert’s study, also published in the British Journal of Nutrition had already pointed to organic food’s superior nutritional performance.

Instead the main focus of the invited letter was Baranski’s more recent again study of organic farming techniques and evidence for lower cadmium (Cd) levels in organic food.

Summarising Baranski, McCarty and DiNicolantonio  said “on average, the Cd content of organically grown foods is approximately half as high as that of the same foods grown conventionally. This probably reflects the fact that many phosphate fertilisers used in conventional agriculture are significantly contaminated with Cd.”

They continue: “This estimate takes into account eighty-seven different comparisons previously reported in the literature, and hence there is little room for doubt that organically grown crops do tend to have lower Cd content.”

What’s the issue with Cd?

“The heavy metal Cd is emerging as a major cause of vascular disorders, various common cancers, kidney disease, osteoporosis and other health disorders, even in populations that do not have occupational exposure to this toxin” they point out.

It’s worth adding that Cd exposure has also been associated with damage to the body’s reproductive and neurological systems.

Indeed the EU has for over a decade been trying, without success, to reduce citizens’ Cd exposure. One of the difficulties is that as sources of phosphate get ever more remote, ever more Cd can be mined too – the two are often found together in nature.

Dietary Cd is found in foods that are otherwise healthful: grains, green vegetables, root vegetables, tubers, organ meat, and shellfish. However the human body has no real mechanism for regulating its Cd levels, so levels tend to accumulate over time, with a half-life of 10-30 years.

Dietry Zinc and spirulina have been shown to fight the negative effects of Cd, but, to the surprise of the authors, very little research has been done on this.

The authors also pointed to the benefits of the higher flavonoid content in organic and the concerns with regard to organophosphatepesticides (it should be noted that in the US a wider range of stronger organophosphates are allowable than in the EU at present).

“For years, nutritionists and consumers have struggled with the question, ‘is organic really better?’” said DiNicolantonio. “What analysis of this research reveals is that, due to the serious health impacts of cadmium exposure and the markedly lower levels of Cd in organically grown foods, the long-term consumption of such foods is likely to be notably protective with respect to a wide range of common pathologies.”

Yet apart from this likkle blog, will even a tremor be registered?
