National Organic Food awards
After a break last year, this year's awards have been tweaked to be of benefit to as many organic businesses as possible. Rather than an overall winner, this year there will be up to three awards in a total of six categories.
These categories are best fresh, best processed, best new; export, innovation and finally direct selling.
For fresh, processed and new, judging criteria will be taste, market opportunity, value for money and packaging/branding. Baked goods are included in the processed category.
For the next three – export, innovation and direct selling, the judging criteria differ.
For export, judges will consider evidence of success (sales results), ability of company to overcome export challenges and expected export growth in 2014/15; for innovation criteria are evidence of consumer and/or market insight in the development of the product, packaging or service innovation and sales growth achieved to date post innovation launch; for direct selling, direct sales much be over 51% of turnover. Criteria are evidence of business growth, creativity and flair in sales and customer service approach.
Each of the three winners selected within the six categories, which is potentially up to18 food businesses, will receive a suite of supports to help them develop their organic food business.
These supports will be in innovation, social media marketing and PR, and will be delivered in house in Bord Bia's Dublin offices. There is also the opportunity to use the the 2014 award logo, as well an accompanying press and publicity.
According to Bord Bia, “as the objective of these awards is to recognise the achievements of Irish manufacturers of organic food and drink the following criteria will strictly apply:
Product must be manufactured or grown in the Republic of Ireland i.e. repackaged product is not eligible.
Raw material (e.g. all meat and fish) must be sourced in Ireland.
The product must be produced on a commercial level and available to purchase at the date of entry.
The organisers reserve the right to place entries in whichever category they feel appropriate
Retailer brands are welcome and applications may be received from the retailer and/or the manufacturer
Product must be registered as organic under EU Regulation 834/2007 with certification from one of the recognised accreditation bodies i.e. Organic Trust, IOFGA, Institute for Marketecology (IMO), Global Trust Certification Ltd (GTC) or B.D.A.A. – Demeter U.K.”
On all fronts then, these awards are designed to help develop the indigenous organic food business, which will be of benefit to all organic farmers, growers and processors.
Entering is exceptionally easy and its free. A simple application form on the bordbia website needs to be filled in and entered by 5th September. Two samples are to be sent in, to reach the Bord Bia offices by 16th September. Each package must come with storage instructions - ambient, chilled or
frozen - so that products can be stored appropriately.
I've been lucky enough to be one of the volunteering judges on these awards, and will do so again this year. Its a great way for me and the other judges to get to know what's happening in organic food.
If you have an organic product, its certainly worth entering. Not only is there the positive promotional opportunity the awards offer, there are the potential supports too. And for all who enter there is some basic useful feedback, simply because the product has entered.
