The rapid rise in organic food sales across mainland Europe continues unabated. Indeed a speech made in February by EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan emphasised the global and European success story that is organic food. 

“It is estimated that organic is the fastest growing sector of the food industry, with global revenues increasing from $18 billion in 2000 to $72 billion in 2013 – a fourfold increase in just over a decade.”

“The EU organic market amounted to €22.2 billion euro in 2013, or about a third of the global total. It has seen an average of 6% growth year on year for the past 3 years.”

These facts were delivered by Commissioner Hogan at Biofach, the largest trade fair in the world for organic products. 

Minister of State with responsibility for organics Tom Hayes also attended the event which ran from 11-14th February. He said that “participation in Biofach allows our organic producers and processors to showcase Irish organic produce on a worldwide stage.”  He added that “it also provides ample opportunities to network with purchasing decision makers, both from Europe and further afield.”

Over 2,000 exhibitors and well in excess of 44,000 trade visitors from 136 countries attended the event. Babyfood, soup, meat, seafood, cheese and fish were the sectors represented form Ireland this year.

And in large part, Bord Bia and Irish organic companies have moved past the trade show which is Biofach and more into direct and targeted market development initiatives around Europe.

Denmark is both a target for companies like the Good Herdsman, and a model for how organics can be developed when ambition is applied.

A new 67 point organic farming and food plan, Okologiplan Danmark, has been described as “the most ambitious in the West” by Food and Agriculture Minister Dan Jorgensen. 

A core component of this plan is compulsory co-operation between local, regional and state authorities. Similarly, the approach is multi departmental, also encompassing Education, Environment and even Defence: In Western Denmark, organics already account for a minimum of 40 per cent of products in armed forces' canteens.

Public catering is a major focus of the plan, with a commitment to “more organic items on the menu in canteens, hospitals and daycare institutions,” the Food and Agriculture Minister was reported as saying.

The plan aims to double the area of land dedicated to organic farming by 2020, investing over E50 million. 

Impressive in scope, the plan emphasises areas as diverse as yields, protein crops, marketing, education, plant varieties and finance.

Public institutions in Denmark serve over 800,000 meals every single day. Organic produce sold through public catering doubled from 2010 to 2013, with Copenhagen leading the way.

Anya Hultberg, public procurement expert from the Copenhagen House of Food, Denmark, was in Ireland last year, speaking at the National Organic Food Fair and also the Organic Trust’s AGM. She highlighted the vast potential for organic public procurement. She claimed that organic public procurement had already passed 75% in the Danish capital, with a target of 90% for the 900 public kitchens in the capital.

“In Copenhagen, we wanted to put sustainability to the forefront in our public kitchens and using organic food was a key part of this, but it also required some fundamental changes to how these kitchens operated.  Staff had to be retrained on cooking with raw and seasonal ingredients rather than just reheating pre-prepared, processed foods.”

She added that public kitchens have moved to organic while still managing on “the same budgets as before. Apart from helping to achieve sustainability targets, this shift in policy has had a huge number of added benefits, from better health outcomes in hospitals and care homes to improved staff skill levels and morale.  By using quality organic ingredients, we have seen food waste reduced by a huge amount also.”
