Permaculture Design Course Cloughjordan August 14th

Imagine designing for living, based on how nature functions? Permaculture – based on “permanent agriculture” and “permanent culture” – does just that. It’s an intricate, carefully planned ecology of life, of you in all your surroundings, using 12 design principles and five zones.

If that sounds a bit highfalutin, it isn’t in practical terms. Permaculture can also just about making sense of living – your house, your food, your energy, your work and leisure  as well as your community and surroundings. It’s fundamentally collaborative and  respectfully of nature.

Importantly, it’s also fun and fulfilling. Do you love designing things?  Are you ready to get to know, really know, the people around you? Do you want your food to be more embedded – natural stuff you grew yourself?

If any of this is of interest to you, you may want to sign up for the nine day residential day Permaculture Design Certificate, which runs from  Friday 14 - Sunday 23 August this year in Cloughjordan ecovillage in Tipperary.

I live there myself, and you can always tell when the permaculture class is around, there's a little more of a buzz, with new people chipping in.

It’s the perfect spot for such a course, as there’s a little of so many things, a mosaic of many elements of work and life in Cloughjordan. Recently, I counted 20 specific, distinct but interrelated agri-food aspects to the ecovillage and town.

These include a community owned farm; a wood fired bakery using local windfall trees for energy; community polytunnels and apiaries, forage walks, edible landscaping, pop up restaurants, allotments, demonstration gardens, and a dozen more similar things.

A cynic might call it a permaculture pet farm, an optimist a future-orientated intentional community.

This upcoming permaculture course will make the best use of many of these agri-food and indeed other elements in Cloughjordan.

Davie Philip is one of the tutors and organisers.

“The essence of Permaculture is the design of an ecologically sound way of living. It is a very practical and effective way to emulate natural patterns and principles to increase our resilience and quality of life. Diversification reduces risk and builds resilience and is essential to a permaculture approach. Nature relies on a large variety of species, systems and organisms that allow it to withstand external shocks, because diversity gives strength. Everyone can study and apply Permaculture design; it really is an application of common sense.”

He continues: “in practical terms permaculture is about protecting and enriching the soil, boosting biodiversity and using natural resources in a healthy way. Underpinning this is the simple idea of working with, rather than against nature.”

So why Cloughjordan?

“Cloughjordan Ecovillage really provides an excellent destination for a permaculture design course, offering a unique opportunity for an immersion into community and the systems of sustainability.  Permaculture design was used to integrate the buildings, the community farm, woodlands, and renewable energy elements within a living community on the 67 acre estate of the ecovillage.”

He adds that “the 9 day residential course is delivered by a number of experts who live and work in Cloughjordan Ecovillage and are passionate about their area of interest. Through a mix of facilitated learning, master classes, practical hands on experiences and field trips, the course is hosted in the We Create green enterprise centre, and utilises the RED Gardens (Research Education and Development), the Cloughjordan Community Farm, Riot Rye Bakery and the orchards and edible landscapes all located in Cloughjordan Ecovillage.”

“Food is a big theme of this unique learning experience and participants will enjoy meals form local produce form the farm, orchards, and from other farms and producers in the area.”
